HARTFORD, July 29, 2009 – Individual tickets to the Hartford Symphony Orchestra’s 66th Season will be available for purchase beginning Monday, August 3, 2009. Led by Music Director Edward Cumming, the season will open Friday, September 25 and Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. in Mortensen Hall at The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts with Van Cliburn International Piano Competition Gold and Silver Medalists Haochen Zhang and Yeol Eum Son performing Rachmaninoff’s Second and Third Piano Concerti.
The 2008-2009 Masterworks Series gave Hartford a taste for the acoustic possibilities of The Belding Theater; the intimate space brought the audience up close and personal with Beethoven’s nine Symphonies. But that was just the tip of the iceberg. Highlighting the 2009-2010 season will be some of the most breathtaking works in the orchestral repertoire: Mahler’s epic Ninth Symphony, Brahms’ German Requiem; Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony; Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite; and Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony.
The Hartford Symphony’s 2009-2010 POPS! Series will feature an array of the most exciting, popular vocal acts from across the country, including Marvin Hamlisch, Al Martino, Tiempo Libre, Julie Budd, Five by Design, Christiane Noll, Doug LaBrecque, and many more. New this season will be three opportunities to hear the seasonal favorite, “Holiday POPS! Spectacular,” featuring The Hartford Chorale and Connecticut Children’s Chorus, in the more intimate setting of The Belding Theater.
This season marks a special time for the Hartford Symphony: the beginning of its search for a new Music Director. “The search for a new music director is always an exciting time for the future of an orchestra,” says Kristen Phillips. “We are in a very fortunate position of having extended Edward Cumming’s tenure with the orchestra through the 2011 season, while at the same time searching for his successor.” Audiences will get the chance to see and hear the first set of music director candidates at the November, December, January, and March Masterworks concerts. (See attached calendar for more information.)
