Assistant Principal, Horn Section

Emery Tapley is “native grown.” Born in the Hartford area and raised in the home he now owns, the nut hasn’t fallen far from the tree. Besides performing with the HSO as assistant principal horn, he is also the Symphony’s Director of Education and Community Programs. Emery is retired from the Hartford Public School system having spent 24 years as a music teacher to students in grades K-6 and an additional 10 years as a Kindergarten teacher. In past summers Emery could be found performing in the pit at the Goodspeed Opera House and the old Oakdale Theater.
When not working (which is rare), he enjoys traveling, gardening, or just plain “chillin” at his home with his two basenjis, Kimba and Jake.
Emery has been with the HSO since 1969.
