Young Artists Competition

The Hartford Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce that pianist Lloyd Chen won first place at the HSO’s 2011 Young Artists Competition with his performance of Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor.

Encouraging talented young instrumental musicians to continue their musical studies, the statewide instrumental competition is open to Connecticut high school students studying an instrument of the orchestra: brass, woodwind, string, percussion, or piano. During the formal Finals Concert, five finalists performed a standard concerto movement from memory with accompaniment. The winners split cash prizes totaling $3,000, and the first-place winner may perform on a future HSO concert.

This competition is an invaluable performance experience for the aspiring student musician who has achieved a high level of proficiency.

The Hartford Symphony Orchestra receives major support from the Greater Hartford Arts Council, the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, and the Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism.

We are now accepting applications for this years competition. Applications must be submitted by February 10, 2012.
