Mentoring Program

Symphony At… Concerts
The Hartford Symphony Orchestra’s “side by side” program provides multiple opportunities for professional and student musicians to work together. For each program, this collaboration culminates with a formal concert for the community. The school’s student band, orchestra, chorus and soloists work with HSO musicians and a guest conductor during rehearsals and coaching sessions prior to the dress rehearsal and concert. Symphony At . . . provides mentoring situations for students to improve their performance skills and creates an unforgettable concert experience for the entire community.

Master Classes and Workshops with Guest Artists
The Hartford Symphony Orchestra provides opportunities for its own musicians and solo guest artists to interact with students and various community organizations. Many master classes and workshops are open to the general public. Please call Emery Tapley at 860.246.8742, ext. 308 if you are interested in hosting a master class at your location.

HSO Master Teaching Artists
The professional musicians of the HSO expertly coach middle and high school instrumental students in small ensembles or as part of a sectional. This program is an excellent opportunity for the ensemble director who may not be proficient in every instrument, but is required to direct all students.

Artists in Residence
This program is custom designed to meet the individual needs of the host school. Tailored as an enhancement to established in-school programs; students receive hands-on opportunities to perform for and with the expert, professional musicians from one of the established in-school ensembles of your choosing. Multiple visits by your selected ensemble provide intensive individual and sectional coaching which is central to the students’ artistic growth as they progress toward a culminating concert where they perform side-by-side with their mentors.

Student Internships
In 2007, the HSO launched its new Arts Administration Internship Program to provide the best experience for college students seeking a career in the arts while better serving the needs of the HSO. A limited number of unpaid undergraduate and graduate internships in the HSO’s marketing/public relations, education/community programs, and arts administration departments are available each season. Students may receive college credit; depending on arrangements made with their school. Interns must be available 10-12 hours per week.

Junior internships provide middle and high school students with a great opportunity to learn about arts administration and non-profit organizations. Their participation may also fulfill school community service requirements. Time commitments vary depending on junior intern’s schedule and the HSO’s needs.
