Masterworks

June 7- 9, 2024

We close our 80th Masterworks season with a return appearance from Melissa White, the HSO’s 2023-2024 Joyce C. Willis Artist in Residence, underwritten by The Roberts Foundation, performing the soaring melodies of Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1. According to Carlos Simon, his intent for Amen! was “to re-create the musical experience of an African American Pentecostal church service that I enjoyed being part of while growing up in this denomination.” Each movement flows into the next to reflect the way the worship service flows. Inspired by the astrological characters of each planet, Holst’s The Planets bears the richness and emotional warmth of humanity, encapsulating the theme of the entire program bringing people together through the spirit of music.

The Talcott Mountain Music Festival commences with a dazzling tribute to the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. Starring vocal powerhouses Capathia Jenkins and Ryan Shaw, the performance celebrates Aretha Franklin’s illustrious career with renditions of iconic hits including “Respect,” “Think,” and “A Natural Woman.” The program also features a heartfelt Salute to Ray Charles, capturing the essence of the 1960s golden age of soul music.

We are dedicated to the thoughtful SHARING of BEAUTY, to the belief that the collective experience of live music lifts the spirit with a sense of awe & WONDER, and that the COMMUNITY formed in these gatherings are bonded by a universal language and a contract of unspoken values that continue to grow beyond one experience. Because it’s music—after all.

Music for all.
